Meet Joe, Founder and Owner of Ways Beyond Words.

Joe Richmond

Founder, Ways Beyond Words

Joe is an advocate, activist, educator, facilitator, and researcher in the areas of global disability and LGBTQIA+ justice. He is now approaching the end of his doctoral studies (PhD), where he researches ableist discrimination, harassment and violence towards people with disabilities in North African literature, film, and politics.

He currently works as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the Department of Languages, Cultures, and Film (LCF) at the University of Liverpool. He teaches a variety of modules to undergraduate students on topics such as biopolitics, critical disability studies, crip theory, and the medical humanities. Joe has a research background in comparative literature, disability cultural studies, queer theory/LGBTQIA+ studies, and anti-colonial, decolonial, and postcolonial thought.

Joe presents, publishes, teaches and writes widely on disability and LGBTQIA+ culture, history and politics in Africa (Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tunisia). Joe’s primary working languages are English and French. He is learning Arabic and Darja (North African Arabic).

Joe worked in the charity and voluntary sectors in the Northwest of England for close to 10 years. From 2016 to 2023, he taught English as a second language (ESL) with various educational charities based in Liverpool, Manchester, and Leeds before taking on various roles in health and social care, a sector to which he remains committed.
